Exploring Sweden: The Stockholm Globe

The Stockholm Globe

Ericsson Globe, originally known as Stockholm Globe Arena and is commonly referred to in Swedish simply as Globen. The Ericsson Globe is, since it’s inauguration in 1989, one of Stockholm’s most iconic buildings. The Globen is the largest hemispherical building on Earth and took two and a half years to build. Shaped like a large white ball, it has a diameter of 110 meters (361 feet) and an inner height of 85 meters (279 feet). The volume of the building is 605,000 cubic meters (21,188,800 cubic feet). It has a seating capacity of 16,000 spectators for shows and concerts, and 13,850 for ice hockey. Though the Globen serves as Sweden’s national hockey arena, it also hosts a variety of other events and concerts and through the years with some of the world’s biggest artists have graced its main stage: The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Beyoncé, Madonna and U2 to name a few. The vista from The SkyView, a gondola running along the outside of structure’s curved wall, offers a spectacular view of southern Stockholm.

The SkyView gondola

Skyview is an exterior inclined elevator which transports visitors to the top of the arena for a virtually unobstructed view of Stockholm. It has two spherical gondolas, each able to accommodate up to 16 passengers, which travel along parallel tracks on the exterior of the south side of the globe.

There are 3 stadiums inside the Globen. The District name is Johanneshov and the metro takes you to the stop “Globen”. Its about 5 minutes walk from the center of town. The SkyView elevator costs 160 Swedish Kroner for an adult. The two SkyView gondolas depart every 10 minutes, and the entire visit takes about 30 minutes. Restaurant, café, and souvenir shop are adjacent to SkyView. If you have a Stockholm pass, you get free entry to the SkyView.

View from the SkyView gondola

Ericsson Globe is situated in the southern part of Stockholm so as you ascend on your 20 minute ride up the SkyView, you can get views over the southern suburbs. It’s a great way to experience Stockholm and is a good one for your bucket list of things to do in the city. Here are some photos I took of the amazing views from the top 🙂
